Angel Olsen has shared a cover of Billy Idol’s ‘Eyes Without a Face’. It’s the latest track lifted from her upcoming covers EP, Aisles. The American musician has put out a number of drool-worthy covers of late. She reaches the zenith with her latest, a dreamy rework of Billy Idol’s ‘Eyes Without A Face’.
The 1984 ballad is arguably Idol’s finest work (get out of here with your ‘Dancing With Myself’ nominations). Like all great covers, Olsen preserves enough of the original to make it recognisable, while also remaking it in her image.
Angel Olsen – ‘Eyes Without a Face’
Olsen’s take on ‘Eyes Without A Face’ follows covers of Laura Branigan’s ‘Gloria’ and Men Without Hats’ ‘The Safety Dance’. On each, Olsen proves she has no aversion to ’80s pop melodrama, but she doesn’t simply submit to the aesthetic blueprint of the originals.
The Aisles EP will be available digitally this Friday, 20th August. Physical versions are set to arrive on Friday, 24th September. In May this year, Olsen teamed up with Sharon Van Etten on the original track ‘Like I Used To’, an acoustic version of which emerged online last week.
